While two weeks is obviously a short sample size, it is enough to at least make some informed predictions. It is hard to not overreact after a couple weeks, but so I urge everyone not to simply dump all of their pre-season guesses out the window. With that being said, let’s look at some important trends heading into week 3…
AFC East:
Bills:
- Next
Pats:
- Gronk is coming off a bad game verse one of the best defenses in the league. He’s fine.
- Dorsett seemed to have raised some interest in week 1, but followed that with a poor week 2 performance. I’ll pass.
- Josh Gordon with Tom Brady is hard to ignore. No one truly knows how this combo can turn out. Maybe he’ll get 2 receptions a game, maybe he’ll get waived, maybe he’ll be a stud. Either way, he is worth a bench spot on your team.
- Edelman actually may benefit from Gordon’s presence. The additiona leaves the possibility of Edelman’s overall targets to decrease since there’s more mouths to feed (VOLUME), but at the same time perhaps the attention Gordon may demand can in turn help Edelman find weaker coverage. It’s a toss up, but I am not overly concerned. Buy Edelman if you can. He’ll be worth it.
- Staying away from the RB situation. Those that were high on Burkhead are likely having second thoughts. Rightly so. Who the hell knows with Belichick. Rather be safe and avoid them.
Jets:
- Enunwa. He’s good. He’s a FLEX starter. Don’t really trust him as anything more as teams start to pay more attention to him. Especially with a rookie QB. But if you had the insight to draft him, good for you, and enjoy the rewards of a solid fantasy starter who’s in line for some poor performances. My advice: Sell if you can while he’s hot. Especially if he does well in this Browns game.
- Crowell…Powell….interesting choices. Powell in PPR leagues should absolutely be a fill in FLEX RB3 depending on matchup (and a rookie QB, perfect for small dump offs). Crowell at the goal line I look to, and is a solid desperation move / backup when bye weeks roll around.
Fins:
- Tough call. Stills looks great. Parker is about to return, which could have an impact on stills. Amendola is a nice addition to the offense simply for short-moderate gains on 2nd/3rd down. If anything he will help keep the offense on the field, though I am not comfortable even considering him at the Flex/WR spot. I view Tannehill as a young Alex Smith with a slightly better deep ball. Toss up every game it seems so I’m staying away.
- Drake is getting vultured by Gore occasionally, and it will be that way all season (most likely about 8-10 carries worth). Ah well, Drake is still the clear No. 1 and is big enough to be the goal line guy too (although the possibility for Gore TD vultures exist). I like Drake, but couldn’t pull the early trigger in the draft. So far I’m happy about my decision, we’ll see how it plays out.
AFC North:
Bengals:
- Mixon’s 2-4 weeks absence hurts, but better now than playoff season. He looks great and clearly has the VOLUME. Congrats if you drafted him. One less position to worry about.
- Green is clearly a top 10 WR, but it was unclear if his actual ranking would match his fantasy ranking going into the season. I liked him as a “bounce back” candidate especially with Dalton’s season last year. And with a quality RB, this offense is solid. Top WR on a solid offense is a good combo. He’ll have a couple off games with Dalton at the Helm, but that was known.
- Boyd/Ross is a situation to monitor. Not comfortable starting Boyd yet. He has the targets as the second WR on this team but not enough to warrant even a FLEX start yet. Keep watching but there is reason to be optimistic.
Ravens:
- I mean…they’re…good? Destroying the
Billsworst team in the league and then putting up a surprising yet incomplete comeback against the Bengals on TNF is a tough sample to make predictions from. - Not comfortable really starting anyone on this team. If you have a large bench and an iffy QB1 I would consider picking up Flacco (dependent on who else is available obviously). Allen is someone I am not trusting still. Shy away. But Crabtree/Brown are worth bench stashes until a better prediction can be made
Steelers:
- Yeesh. Luckily their defensive woes only help the offense air it out more. Juju is a stud, and outperforming what I initially thought. Brown I would not overreact to yet, although the winless start and subsequent then-trade-me response didn’t help.
- If you have Le’Veon, which I do in one league…I’m not really sure what to tell you. Hope for the best. Scavenge the waivers. Put on a brave face.
AFC South:
Jags:
- Is Cole legit? Who the hell knows. But let’s consider: He has the Allen Robinson role (who did well in it) on a defensive/running team. They don’t have much receiver talent. I like him as a FLEX. Would be nervous about anything more.
- Buy Fournette. Sell Yeldon. Quick. Unless people in your league are competent.
Titans:
- Sigh. Week 1 was not only a giant question mark since it lasted over 7 hours with multiple weather delays, but it also resulted in Walker out for the season. Damn. Oh yeah, and Mariota is injured and who the hell knows how long it will take for him to be 100%. I had high hopes on Mariota prior to week 1, but a potentially lingering injury and losing his best receiver certainly dampers those hopes. I stand by what I said since who knows how it would have played out if they played at home at Week 1 (or anything that wasn’t a 7 hours game with injuries). But yeah…drop him until we see him play a few games.
- Corey Davis is completely dependent on Mariota. Gabbert is not trusted throwing the ball (under 200 yards last week). Keep him and bench him for now. Try to buy him for cheap. I had high hopes as well, and Walker again hurts since even though he does get more targets, he also gets 3x more attention. Damn
- Dion Lewis….Lewis Lewis Lewis. I view him as my Arch Rival even though he has no idea I exist. WHY CAN’T DERRICK HENRY CATCH THE BALL. MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU COULD HAVE DONE THIS SUMMER. AS SOON AS THE TITANS ARE DOWN LEWIS JUST CAMPS OUT ON THE FIELD KNOWING HE OWNS ALL THE CARRIES. INJURIES TO THE QB AND TE JUST CAUSE THEM TO PRESSURE THE BOX MORE AND MAKES THE OFFENSE MORE ONE DIMENSIONAL. LIKELY LEADING TO THE TEAM TO FALL BEHID AND THEN BRING IN LEWIS. WHYYY.
- Sorry had to vent there. Was so in on Henry. Keep him, bench him, try to buy him for cheap. I have hope, contingent on Mariota’s recovery. Henry is still a goal line back who can rack up TDs. Down but not out (gulp)
Colts:
- Seems like he’s 85% of the Old Luck. Doyle/Ebron is a toss up, but Doyle getting 15 targets in 2 weeks total (VOLUME) is all I care about. Think he can be a serviceable TE, especially with the colts likely having to keep up on offense (unlike week 2…which will be rare).
- Don’t love the RBs so staying away
- Hilton…didn’t love going into the season. Still don’t love. Can’t have my No. 1 WR on this team.
Texans:
- Damn…how do you lose at home to the Gabbert led titans. Buy Watson if you can. They’ll be fine as an offense. Miller was a great draft find that was scooped up late most likely. Enjoy the rewards, and don’t overreact.
AFC West:
Chiefs:
- What do you need to know? Watch highlights from either game. They’ll obviously come back down to earth a bit, but keep that grin on if you drafted any offensive player. Hell even Watkins seems like he can produce at a FLEX rate.
- Am I worried about Hunt? Nah. Buy if you can.
Broncos:
- Damn…sorry Freeman. Who the hell knew the next Sproles would be on your team. Although, it still seems like he’ll get a fair share of carries and will be the preferred goal line back. Would not start Freeman until he puts up a solid game. Would feel comfortable starting Lindsay whenever.
- This WR corps was sketchy with Keenum at the helm, but they’re both talented and get solid volume. Start either. But if you drafted a WR late and your WR1 is Thomas…fix that. They’re both good complementary pieces in a so-so offense.
Raiders:
- Gruden forgot Lynch existed in week 1, but then it came out that Lynch wasn’t feeling 100%. Week 2 he did better. He’ll get his TDs. Hopefully Gruden keeps the trend of unleashing Lynch more. Comfortable with him as my Flex or even my RB2 if I have a great WR corps. Raiders will start competing better (I hope) and with a lead Lynch will be a monster. Seeing that he’s done fairly well without this lead (and against some amazing defenses…) gives me optimism. Buy.
Chargers:
- Who did they verse last week? The Bills? Yeah, ignore that week
- They have a good offense. Ekeler is a pleasant surprise and is going to be a nuisance for Gordon owners, but nothing to severe.
- I just can’t trust any other WR besides Allen yet.
- Rivers = QB1. Probably got him late. Well done my friend.
